Onion Sambhar


Onion Sambhar can be used as a side dish for Idli / Dosa / Pongal / Rice

Quantity used below can serve : 3 people

Ingredients :

Oil - 1 tsp
Shallots - 6 nos (chopped)
Green chilli - 4 (slitted)
Tomato - 2 (chopped)
Toor dhal - 200 gm
Turmeric powder - 1 tsp
Sambhar powder - 1.5 tsp
Asafoetida - a pinch
Salt - as required
Tamarind juice - prepared from a half lemon sized tamarind and water
Water - 400 ml
Coriander leaves - to garnish

To temper:
Oil - 1 tsp
Mustard - 1 tsp
Cumin - 1 tsp
Curry leaves - few


Method :

1. Pressure cook dhal (3 whistles) mash it and keep it aside.



2. In a pan, heat 1 tsp oil. Add shallots, green chilli, tomato and fry till it turns mushy.

                


                                         




3. Add cooked dhal mixture to the pan.



4. Add salt, turmeric powder,asafoetida and sambhar powder. Let it boil for 5 minutes.

     
                      


5. Add tamarind juice and boil till the consistency is attained.
    To Temper : Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard, cumin, curry leaves. Wait for it to splutter.
    Add the tempered ingredients to the sambhar.



7. Finally add chopped coriander leaves to garnish.





Serve HoT :)
